Three quarters of the Alfies customers support disposable deposit-but to improve return in inpatient trade

The online supermarket Alfies also introduced the disposable deposit at the beginning of the year and, in addition to reusable contains, is now also taking PET bottles and metal cans with the next order. After around four months, not only Alfies is satisfied with the new system, but also its customers: three quarters of them support the disposable deposit system due to the positive effect of recycling on the environment. However, you see some aspects such as the return machine and the deposit payment in stationary trading potential for improvement.

The survey of the online supermarket Alfies, which is active in the Vienna and Graz area as well as in Zurich, shows a significant acceptance of the disposable deposit in PET bottles and metal cans introduced at the beginning of the year: three quarters (73.3%) of the almost 2,500 surveyed advocates this because the regulation contributes to the protection of the environment. 15 percent stated that they now pay more attention to recycling than before the one -way deposit was introduced.

Pfand had already returned over two thirds of the Alfies customers surveyed (67.1%) at the time of the survey-around a quarter (26.6%) of them already at Alfies themselves, that is, that they gave the Driver the empties again when they were delivered and were automatically credited to their customer account. Most who have already returned disposal deposits did so in a supermarket branch (58.5% of those surveyed).

First Alfies conclusion after around four months

The online supermarket itself has also supported the introduction of the disposable deposit since the beginning and understood as part of its endeavor to operate more sustainably. Alfies co -founder and managing director Gunther Michl sees the disposable deposit as an opportunity for customer service: “We had already had very good experiences with the reusable deposit beforehand. The customers have the opportunity to simply use the glass bottles again. So we were always happy to be used. We were convinced that it will be the case with the disposable deposit. We are pleased that the current survey confirms our acceptance and shows a high level of acceptance of the new deposit.”

Alfies had intensively prepared for the introduction of the disposable deposit system with the adaptation of his software, which employed employee processes and storage areas. “With internal training and intensive customer information about the web shop, the apps and our newsletter, we have succeeded in conveying a lot of knowledge, so that the return and further processing of the containers work smoothly”Michl continues. This is also confirmed by the survey: 86 percent stated that they are very or good to be familiar with the new system. Less than two percent said that they would not be familiar with.

Suggestions for improvement for the return

As part of the survey, the Alfies customers also had the opportunity to express suggestions for improvement in the current deposit system. One of the main criticism was that the return was not yet user -friendly enough. There are, for example, too few deposit machines that can also be used outside of business hours of the inpatient supermarkets. Instead of printed receipts, the deposit amount should be transferred digitally everywhere, for example on a kind of pledge voucher card. The fact that dealers are only committed to withdraw the containers that they themselves have in the range is perceived as a challenge.

Having an additional container for disposable deposits in the household is still getting used to for many of the respondents. Above all, the area that is lost is a problem for some, which is why there is also trouble about why PET bottles and metal cans must not be compressed.

Disposable deposit only as the first step

Every tenth sees the introduction of the disposable deposit as a necessary intermediate step, but further measures to strengthen the circular economy must follow. On the one hand, it was required to extend the pledge to further containers (e.g. dairy products or shower gel), on the other hand to force the switch from disposable to reusable packaging. A cross -border deposit system has also been proposed several times.
