On February 12th at 9:10 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Christoph Feurstein will present the following contributions in “Thema” on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 9:10 p.m. on ORF 2:

Peak number of drug deaths and how to get out of it

“Several hospital stays saved my life,” says Dali Maislinger. He has survived a drug past involving ecstasy, cocaine and heroin. Many of his friends didn’t make it, says the now 47-year-old in the “Theme” interview. In 2022, around 250 people died of an overdose in Austria, a quarter are young adults. This is shown by the current drug report from Health Austria. Opioids such as heroin in particular are detected more frequently in the dead. Why are more and more people in Austria dying from drug use and how can this be prevented? A report by Pia Bichara and Eva Plank.

The village of the future – cohesion in Stanz im Mürztal

“If you are directly affected by it, you realize that climate change has been here for a long time,” says retired teacher Johanna Wild-Friesenbichler. Her hometown of Stanz in the Mürztal in Styria is severely affected by extreme weather events. That’s why villagers got together and started climate-friendly initiatives. An electric taxi is operated by volunteers. The neighbors have come together to form an energy community in which self-produced electricity is sold. The local council unanimously passed a climate lawsuit that calls for a clear timetable for Austria’s exit from fossil energy sources. Tobias Langer and Savanka Schwarz looked at why what is otherwise often difficult is possible in Stanz:
Unity on climate issues.

Explosive job – Austria’s best bomb defuser

“For a long time I didn’t realize that I had two faces. In my job I’m not allowed to show emotions. Because they put me in danger. But privately you want to be open.” That’s what Colonel Jürgen Pirolt, director of the European Hand Defusing Center, says. He and his team of 14 men form a special army unit that defuses bombs and mines without robots and directly at the source of danger. The experts are deployed in hostage situations and terrorist attacks. Colonel Jürgen Pirolt was named “Soldier of the Year 2023” by Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner in November 2023. The award winner provides insights into his work, reports in “Topic” about the biggest challenges of his job and explains why it is not easy for him to allow emotions in his private life. Mariella Gittler visited him.
