In the run-up to the EU summit on June 26, the green EU MP and climate activist Lena Schilling warns of a possible dangerous change of course in European climate policy. Such a step would not only undermine the European Climate Protection Act, but also massively weaken the EU’s international leadership role in the fight against the climate crisis – a few months before the decisive COP30 World Climate Conference in Brazil.
The European Commission originally wanted to present the new climate target on July 2. The discussion about a shift could now endanger the entire schedule – and thus also the timely submission of a European contribution to global climate policy.
Lena Schilling appeals:
“The climate crisis cannot be moved. Not by a year, not by a month, not at a day.
And yet some apparently are calling for this summit to delay the EU climate target for 2040. But one thing is clear: if we do not lower emissions by 90 percent by 2040, there is no longer any credible EU climate policy.
I appeal to you: the young generation that will pay the price for your decisions are not the future. Do not write your political responsibility on a beer lid that my generation then has to pay. ”
“You can’t delete a burning planet with empty promises,” concluded Schilling.
