The famous traditional choir is always looking for new talent – for the entire campus. Whether elementary school child, choir girl, choir boy or high school student: the campus in Augarten offers everyone a well-founded education, and not just in music. On Friday, October 4th, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., there will be the opportunity to find out personally about the various training programs offered by the Vienna Boys’ Choir, which have been ennobled by UNESCO. In addition to music and singing, this is about academic excellence: the range of subjects also includes ethics and religion, political education and law, Italian and Latin; there are workshops and excursions. In addition to young artists such as castle actor Tilman Tuppy and pianist Lukas Sternath, the school’s graduates include doctors, lawyers, economic experts and scientists. Director Hans-Christian Granaas: “With 330 students, we are a small campus, everyone knows each other, helps each other – and we can accompany the children and young people individually in their development.”
Singing is important. Wherever you sing, the saying goes, you should settle down quietly. Numerous studies have shown that singing trains the brain and the ability to concentrate. It has also been proven that singing strengthens the immune system and makes you happy – when singing, serotonin and oxytocin are released. Ultimately, choristers’ hearts beat to the same beat; a choir only works as a team. “Singing has never been as important as it is right now,” says Erasmus Baumgartner, the acting artistic director of the Augarten campus: “Singing, especially singing together, gives you joy, hope and therefore personal security. This is particularly important for children and young people – they can’t sing enough.” To compensate, the campus also offers sports fields and its own indoor swimming pool.
The Vienna Boys’ Choir – it’s not just the four famous boys’ choirs. The Vienna Choir Girls have also been students at the AHS on campus since September. The institution also has an elementary music school and a high school with a focus on vocal music.
During the tour talk, Boys’ Choir President Erich Arthold gives insights into the tour system, the complex logistics behind it and the everyday life of the choirs on the road. Director Granaas and his team answer questions about the high school curriculum. At the elementary music school, director Markus Semelliker provides in-depth advice. Short performances by the choir boys and choir girls are on the program; The Chorus Primus of the primary music school invites you to the “Circus Furioso”.
In open rehearsals you can experience how the boys’ choir, choir girls and high school choir work on pieces; Voice training shows how individual voices are promoted. Tours of the campus are also offered. At the end there is a singing together for everyone – with all the choirs and the visitors. By the way: If you want, you can audition right then and there. Career changers are also welcome. “It’s never too late for music,” says ORG student Ronja, 17.
