The Microhistory of Words. Holocaust-Yiddish as a Window onto Prisoner Life

The Holocaust the way many Eastern European Jews changed Yiddish Languages, radical. Since the language of the pre -war period was unable to describe the captivity, death and dehumanization they had to suffer, the captured added thousands of Yiddish words and expressions to describe their new reality. Some Jiddish spokesman: Inside, recognized that Khurbn-Jiddische Words contained profound truths and set out to put together dictionaries and glossary to document and analyze these new words. Others took the Khurbn-Jiddish in their poetry and prose. In her lecture, Pollin-Galay will concentrate on two key terms of this new socio, one of which has to do with the topic of theft and the other with German-Yiddish encounters.

Hannah Polle-entered is extraordinary professor at the Faculty of Literature at the University of Tel Aviv, where she also heads the Jona Goldrrich Institute for Yiddish language, literature and culture. Pollin galay researches and teaches above all in the field of Yiddish literature and the Holocaust studies and recently started to deal with ecological policy. Her first book, “Ecologies of Witnessing: Language, Place and Holocaust Testimony” (Yale 2018), investigates how oral witness reports are shaped by the language and geography of the survivors. Her most recent book, “Occupied Words: What the Holocaust Did to Yiddish” was awarded the National Jewish Book Award 2024 in Holocaust Studies.
