The Federal Army is increasing disaster relief with pioneers and heavy equipment

Klaudia Tanner: “These reinforcement forces show that the Federal Army is ready for action at any time.”

Vienna (OTS) In the morning hours of July 14, 2024, in addition to the 33 Styrian pioneers deployed so far, a further 55 disaster relief specialists began the assistance mission for disaster relief in Styria. These reinforcement forces are provided by the Villach Pioneer Battalion 1. There are currently 88 pioneers – also with heavy equipment – helping to clear blockages in the Teigitschgraben near Voitsberg.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “The events of the last few days show how important it is to act quickly and in a coordinated manner. These reinforcement forces show that the Federal Army is ready to help and support at any time – protecting the population is the top priority. This preparedness highlights the role of the armed forces in dealing with disasters and supporting our society. I would like to thank all soldiers and civilian emergency services who are ready to be there for the population in times of need.”

Pioneers and heavy equipment in action

The Villach pioneers bring heavy equipment with them to clear blockages. Two excavators with up to 20 tons and two crane trucks with up to 76 tons of lifting power support the assistance mission for disaster relief. Eight chainsaw cutting teams reinforce the existing forces. During the dangerous work, two medical teams from the Army are available on site to provide initial medical care. As of today, a total of 88 pioneers are solving blockages along the Teigitschgraben near Voitsberg. The duration of use cannot currently be estimated.

Assistance when required

If a catastrophe is imminent – for example due to persistent rain – the soldiers in the barracks prepare themselves and stay ready. Within a few hours they are ready to help. At the request of the authorities, the Federal Army deploys for assistance and supports civilian emergency services. In the event of major accidents, several thousand helpers can ensure help for people in Austria at the same time.
