The enthusiasm for donations in Austria continues to grow

Current donation market report shows: Willingness to donate in 2023 at a record level despite inflation.

Vienna (OTS) Despite the financial burden on large parts of the population, Austria’s donors show an excessive amount of heart: According to the current donation market survey by the social research institute Public Opinion among over 1,000 people, the proportion of donors in the population, contrary to the international trend, increased again in 2023: almost three quarters of people in the country said they had donated in the previous year – the second highest figure after 2019.

The trend among wealthy industrialized countries for years has been for fewer and fewer people to give ever larger amounts. The multiple crises of recent years have further accelerated this development. As the current donation report from the Fundraising Association Austria shows, inflation in particular has caused donations to decline as early as 2022, even in leading philanthropy nations such as the USAgives Ruth Williams, Managing Director of Fundraising Association Austriainsight and emphasizes: With a new donation record and a consistently high level of participation in donations by the entire population, Austria has now taken on an exceptional position in the global donation landscape.

Trend: The willingness to donate has grown in Austria despite inflation

While at the international level there are signs of a decline in generosity in many countries in 2023, the donation market report from the opinion research institute Public Opinion – the annual mood radar for donations in Austria – shows that the Austrian population is extremely enthusiastic about giving: The results of our donation market survey from autumn 2023 surprised us even more as the inflation rate in Austria is still well above the European averageso Bernhard Hofer, Managing Director of Public Opinionwhich continues: According to their own information, donors in this country gave an average of 138 euros for a good cause in 2023 – more than ever before. At the same time, the participation of the entire population in donations has increased even further at 72 percent compared to 2022. A strong signal of broad willingness to give!

Austrian donation mentality unshakable

For Ruth Williams, this extremely encouraging trend is once again proof of the extraordinary social cohesion of the people in Austria: The unexpectedly high level of enthusiasm for donations, even in times of massive financial strain, shows the immense solidarity and strong need of Austrians to get involved in civil society. It now remains to be seen whether the donations actually made to charitable institutions can keep up with this positive self-assessment. In any case, initial experience from the third sector with regard to Christmas donations shows that Austria’s donors showed a big heart for charitable causes at the end of the yearemphasizes Williams.
The managing director expects an additional strong boost from the Federal Government’s Non-Profit Reform Act, which came into force at the beginning of the year: With comprehensive access to charitable donations, all donors will have the opportunity to deduct their donations from taxes for the first time this year, regardless of whether they support people in need, child and youth protection, development aid, animal and environmental protection or local educational initiatives.
