From January 2025, a total of 11,622 asylum applications were made in Austria. In the comparison period 2024 there were 17,171 applications – a decrease of 32 percent. Of these, only 4,545 asylum applications (39 percent) were original, i.e. new. 1,403 asylum applications were brought in in August.
In August, most of the applications came from Afghanistan (405), of which only 195 (51 percent) were original. The rest were lost to follow -up applications or children born in Austria. Due to a ECJ judgment, female beneficiaries in Austria make applications for asylum if only subsidiary protection has been granted.
Deportation January until August 2025: Preliminary numbers
Of the 9,080 deportations of the BFA, 4,717 traces (52 percent) were independent, 4,363 (48 percent). 50 percent of the people are convicted of the deportations. For example, a total of 619 Dublin transfers were carried out by the end of August, including 75 Afghans, 69 Syrians and 67 Algerians.
“The deportions of convicted criminals to Syria and in the future also to Afghanistan are part of a tough and just asylum policy. The course chosen will continue to be processed consistently,” emphasized Interior Minister Gerhard Karner.
The decision statistics
By the end of August, 20,790 proceedings were negative or discontinued. 1,269 people voluntarily refrained from protection and left Austria during the procedure. Asylum or subsidiary protection was granted in 6,984 cases.
In August, applicants from Morocco (1.7 percent), Georgia (2.1 percent) and India (1.6 percent) had no chance of asylum in August. This is where the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs and Asylum continues to focus on quick and urgent procedures. By the end of August, 446 negative decisions were made within 28 days or 72 hours in the first instance.
View to other European countries
In Europe (including Switzerland and Norway), 528,444 asylum applications were made by the end of August 2025 – a decrease of 20 percent compared to the comparison period 2024 (660,412).
Applications in Latvia (+18 percent), Luxembourg (+8 percent) and Croatia (+7 percent) have increased significantly. Applications in many other countries have decreased, Cyprus (-65 percent), Bulgaria (-71 percent), Romania (-52 percent), Germany (-38 percent), Netherlands (-33 percent) and Italy (-20 percent).
In Austria, applications are also reduced compared to the previous year (-32 percent). Extrapolated to the population, Austria is in eleventh place in Europe -wide statistics. In the case of absolute numbers, Austria is behind Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands and in front of Poland and Ireland across the EU.

In recent years, extensive measures have been taken in the fight against illegal migration and tractor mafia. This continuously succeeded in reducing illegal migration. The tractor mafia now avoids Austria and its limits.
At the border control point of the field, the situation has hardly been illegal migration in the past two years, which is why four tents that are no longer required are broken down. This will be the case until mid -October.
The tractor routes could also be displaced in the east of Austria, especially to the so-called Balkan coast route. Measures such as Operation Fox in Hungarian territory have an effect. The reduction of the four large -scale tents in Nickelsdorf has already been completed.
Low numbers in basic care: savings in the asylum area possible
There are currently 55,923 people in basic care, including 1,268 people in federal care. At the beginning of 2023, almost 93,000 people were still in basic care. The decline also enables savings. The number of federal quarters alone has been reduced from more than 30 to currently eight in the past two years.
