The City of Vienna’s 2024/25 influenza vaccination campaign starts | City of Vienna

A total of around 250,000 vaccination doses are available for Vienna, of which around 85,000 vaccination appointments will be at the city vaccination centers alone. Following an agreement between the federal government, the states and the ÖGK, the influenza vaccination will be offered free of charge this year.

The city of Vienna offers free influenza vaccinations in three municipal vaccination centers:

  • TownTown Vaccination Center (1030, Thomas-Klestil-Platz 8/2)
  • Schrödingerplatz vaccination center (1220, Schrödingerplatz 1)
  • Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus vaccination center (1150, Gasgasse 8-10)

The public flu vaccination program takes place throughout Austria primarily at private doctors and the ÖGK health centers. The city of Vienna provides a supplementary offer in its municipal vaccination centers.

Further information can be found either online on the ÖGK website or by calling the flu vaccination hotline on: +43 5 07 66 50 15 10. A list of all vaccinating doctors in Vienna can be found online on the Medical Association website Vienna. Vaccination appointments in the municipal vaccination centers can be made either online from Monday, October 28, 2024 www.impfservice.wien or by calling the health hotline 1450.

Deputy Mayor Gaal and City Councilor for Health Hacker start things off

In order to draw attention to the importance of this year’s influenza vaccination campaign, Vice Mayor Kathrin Gaal will be vaccinated on Monday morning at the FEM Med women’s health center in Favoriten and City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker will be vaccinated on Monday morning at the TownTown municipal vaccination center.

Health service enables Vienna’s largest mobile vaccination campaign to date

The creation of the new city health department in Vienna’s third district laid the foundations for a significant improvement in health care close to home through low-threshold mobile health services. The most noticeable innovation of the new city health department was the city of Vienna’s new vaccination buses, which can be booked flexibly in the districts. These are in their largest deployment to date during the 2024/25 urban influenza vaccination campaign as part of 42 district appointments.

The following vaccinations are offered during the mobile vaccination campaigns:

  • HPV vaccination (free for everyone from 9th to 30th birthday)
  • Flu vaccination (free for all ages)

Please note that small children under 6 years of age cannot be vaccinated. We ask that you register your appointment in advance for mobile vaccination campaigns, otherwise there will be longer waiting times on site. You can also book an appointment here either online www.impfservice.wien or by calling the health hotline 1450.

What is flu?

Flu, also called influenza, is a viral disease. It usually begins suddenly with a high fever, cough, muscle aches, body aches, headaches and general weakness. Existing chronic illnesses, such as asthma or heart disease, can worsen, especially in people with weak immune systems and older people. Other symptoms can also occur, such as pneumonia or inflammation of the heart muscle. These diseases can even lead to death.

It is important to distinguish between real flu (influenza) and a flu-like infection. With a flu-like infection, the fever is usually not as high and the illness progresses more easily and quickly.

The real flu can be treated within 48 hours with special medications that prevent the influenza virus from multiplying. This treatment prevents a serious course of the disease, but not the disease itself.

Flu viruses are transmitted through respiratory droplets, especially through coughing and sneezing. But infection through hands is also possible. It only takes a few days from infection to the onset of symptoms.

To which groups of people is a flu vaccination particularly recommended?

  • Children from the age of 6 months
  • People with chronic illnesses, especially diabetes, cardiovascular or lung diseases
  • Very overweight people
  • People with impaired immune systems due to illness or medication
  • People aged 60 and over
  • Health and care staff
  • People and staff cared for in community facilities (e.g. childcare facilities, kindergartens, schools, social institutions/social professions, old people’s and nursing homes, etc.)
  • Breastfeeding women and people around newborns
  • Pregnant women and women planning to become pregnant during influenza season
  • People with frequent personal contact (e.g. staff in tourism, gastronomy, retail, hairdressing and cosmetics businesses, etc.)
  • Travelers (protection during the trip and at the destination – vaccination recommended at least 2 weeks before departure)
