As a New Year’s resolution or as a Valentine’s Day gift: a preventive examination always pays off. The city of Vienna has declared Men’s Health Month from January 15, 2025 to February 14, 2025. The newly created municipal health care center alone offers 600 free check-ups for men. Unfortunately, they are still reluctant to take precautions: only 16.8 percent of men in Vienna take advantage of a preventive examination. Men’s Health Month is intended to help bring the topic of prevention back to the fore.
Examinations for general health care and for the early detection of certain diseases are among the most important health prevention measures. They serve to identify existing risk factors for illness and reduce them through appropriate measures. Common diseases should be detected in their preliminary stages or at the earliest possible stage.
Vienna Men’s Health Month: Free preventive examinations for people aged 18 and over who live in Austria
To use the service, you must make an appointment in advance (by telephone or online). At the end of the examinations, the doctors discuss the findings with the customers and advise them. Depending on the test results, you may be referred to a general practitioner for further clarification or treatment. Free preventive examinations are available to people aged 18 and over who live in Austria. The presence of an e-card is not necessary to take advantage of the free preventive examination, but proof of your livelihood is.
The services offered specifically include:
- Blood sample (including determination of the prostate-specific antigen value for early detection of prostate cancer from age 45)
- Urinalysis
- Stool sample
- Carrying out an audiometry (hearing test)
- Performing an ECG
- Carrying out a computer-assisted pulmonary function test
- Complete internal examination with blood pressure measurement and listening to the lungs and heart
- Discussion of findings and lifestyle advice
- Computer-assisted examination of the spine (shape and mobility
- Body analysis measurement
The City of Vienna’s Men’s Health Month should not and cannot replace the existing offerings of resident doctors, but rather complements it in a meaningful way. Preventive examinations are of course also possible free of charge once a year at the doctors’ offices in Vienna. In the practice plan of the Chamber of Physicians in Vienna you will find a list of those doctors who offer the basic program. All information can be found online at: www.aekwien.at/vorsorge
