Long-time medical director of the UKH Lorenz Böhler died at the age of 95
Professor Poigenfürst, with whom I was able to have many interesting conversations, was a trauma surgeon known far beyond Austria and one of the great representatives of the ‘Böhler School’.

Vienna (OTS) – The AUVA mourns the loss of Johannes Poigenfürst. Born in Vienna in 1929, Poigenfürst completed his medical studies and completed his specialist training in trauma surgery in the 1950s and early 1960s in England, Sweden and West Berlin and subsequently in New York.
Over the course of his career, Poigenfürst worked in numerous clinics in Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Sweden and the USA.
From 1984 to 1994, Poigenfürst was head of trauma surgery at the AUVA Lorenz Böhler location, today’s Vienna-Brigittenau trauma center. He was also the site’s medical director until his retirement in 1997.
In the early 1990s, Poigenfürst initiated the construction of “Casa Austria”, an accident hospital in Timisoara (Romania). He had already previously been committed to providing emergency medical care on site: equipped with an aid convoy, he and a team of doctors treated seriously injured victims of the Romanian revolution.
Poigenfürst received numerous awards, including “Honorary Membership of the Austrian Society of Surgery”, the “Viktor Frankl Prize of the City of Vienna” and the “Elisabeth Medal in Gold” from Caritas. In 1995 he was made an honorary citizen of Timisoara.
The debate surrounding the Working Hours Act in 1994, which received intensive media attention, was led with passion by Poigenfürst. A passion that was well known to his colleagues at the Lorenz Böhler Accident Hospital.

Johannes Poigenfürst died shortly before his 95th birthday. As AUVA, our thoughts are with his relatives during these hours.
