Are you actually for real facts or do you prefer alternative facts? A few days ago was October 7th, the anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israelis, but people on my feed say that wasn’t an act of terrorism, but legitimate resistance. Russian women living in the US whisper on Tiktok that life is much better under Putin than under Uncle Sam, although it is clear (to me) that they are paid by Mother Russia for their posts. A friend on Facebook predicts that if Trump is not re-elected, a revolution would break out and then America would collapse. A stranger on Instagram concludes that capitalism is to blame for all our problems. She doesn’t suggest an alternative system, but I fear that in a planned economy she would no longer be able to monetize her Reels.

There is one common denominator in all of these crazy narratives – they all come from the internet. It could really be a nice place if there weren’t so many stupid people there. Conspiracy theorists who think that “those at the top” – and not the justice system – decided to finally hold the rapist P. Diddy accountable in order to distract us from “something bigger.” Confused health bloggers who warn about “poisonous” foods such as vegetable oils, all of which are said to lead to cancer, and at the same time promote organic sweets because “organic” always means healthy. Tradition-loving mom influencers who stage an idyllic family life and make their viewers feel guilty because they don’t bake every day and look like top models, but they have nannies themselves and after filming for Insta with their husband (or their lover or their husband’s lover). ?) go out instead of cleaning the kitchen. A crazy chick on Instagram who can see goblins and fairies. A self-proclaimed political expert who recently claimed on Tiktok that a single Israeli was responsible for a genocide in the Congo and named an incredible number of deaths that this Israeli had personally committed, namely a whopping 14 million. It rained almost as many views, likes and reposts as alleged deaths. There are also Tiktok filters that are intended to stop genocides, although it is not entirely clear with what means, but probably not Israeli ones.
On the one hand, humanity has never had so much access to knowledge at once, but on the other hand, we are overwhelmed. Disinformation is everywhere and we believe it as quickly as the illiterates once did in the Middle Ages. But where is the AI, sorry, the AI, when you need it? Can’t the machine be used to combat stupidity? She has to be good for something. For a few years now we’ve been promised all sorts of things, flying taxis, food-delivering robots and package-delivering drones. So far I only have defective “smart home” switches that don’t work on all walls, a Frame TV that occasionally has no sound coming out of the frame, and a family Spotify account that occasionally works in my husband’s car instead of us in the living room Bibi Blocksberg plays. And instead of making our everyday lives easier, the artificial “intelligence” also mixes in with the artists, writes automated, meaningless novels and paints smeared, overpriced robot pictures. As if we didn’t have enough bad human art.
