– The current capricious weather in Austria has serious consequences for migratory birds, especially swallows and swifts. Unusually strong storms, rain and cold affect the animals’ flight conditions and make it difficult for them to eat. These bird species are particularly affected by the drastic weather conditions in Lower Austria.
Due to the cold and wet weather, flying insects, the birds’ main source of food, are hardly active. This results in many swallows and swifts being left weakened and on the ground. The situation is very serious for many swallows and swifts.
Tierschutz Austria reacts to the crisis
The animal protection organization Animal Protection Austria responded immediately to the emergency situation and is calling on the population to report weakened swallows or those in need of help and to bring them to the animal shelter. “Our team is working around the clock to save these animals. They can be dropped off at the animal shelter at any time, and our emergency number is available to report any gatherings of swallows,” says Stephan Scheidl from Tierschutz Austria.
Animal rights activists also call for caution: please keep the windows closed. In this emergency situation, birds try to escape to warmth. Window panes become a deadly trap; once inside apartments, the risk of injury is high. Please be vigilant and especially report gatherings of swallows and swifts with weakened animals.
Animal emergency call and appeal for donations
Tierschutz Austria is not only asking the public to help save the birds, but also for financial support to care for the animals. Donations for the care of the needy swallows and swifts can be made to the following account:
IBAN: AT196000000001717000
The animal emergency number is available for emergencies or reports of gatherings of swallows available around the clock on +43 1 699 2480.
