Survivor of the Hamas massacre at the Nova Festival speaks at the university campus. | JöH

Jewish students and ÖH are organizing a conversation with Aviv Cohen, who survived the massacre at a music festival on October 7th, on May 9th (6:00 p.m.) at the University of Vienna Campus.

Especially now, when relevant anti-Semitic groups such as “Dar-al-Janub” and “Der Funke” are calling for “Intifada”, i.e. violence and terror against Jews, in a Palestine camp on the university campus, it is of the utmost importance to clarify the brutal consequences of this agitation

Vienna (OTS) Aviv Cohen was at a music festival in southern Israel the night before October 7, 2023, where he danced for peace with hundreds of other young people. What he experienced there can hardly be put into words: the Hamas attack on the morning of “Black Saturday” was the largest massacre of Jewish life since the Shoah.

The images, videos and witness statements about the over 1,200 murders and sexual violence are difficult to bear. One of the scenes of atrocity was the Nova Festival for Peace, which took place not far from the border with the Gaza Strip, near the Kibbutz Re’im.

Aviv survived, but 364 young festival participants were brutally massacred, and 40 others were taken to the Gaza Strip as Hamas hostages.

Since October 7, those affected and their families have been constantly confronted with the denial and justification of the Hamas massacre. It is all the more important to give the witnesses of this Black Saturday a space to share their experiences. We invite you to an important conversation with Aviv, who, as a survivor of the Nova Festival, will talk about that day and its consequences.

“Especially now, when relevant anti-Semitic groups such as “Dar-al-Janub” and “Der Funke” are calling for “Intifada”, i.e. violence and terror against Jews, in a Palestine camp on the university campus, it is of the utmost importance to educate about the brutal consequences of this agitation.” explains Alon Ishay, President of the Jewish Austrian Students.
