The 24th edition of the day of sport once again lured tens of thousands of visitors to Vienna’s Heldenplatz on Saturday. Sports Secretary Michaela Schmidt opened the largest open-air sports festival in Austria. The former fistball Bundesliga player and passionate climbing then tried out on the climbing wall.
“The day of sport has long been more than an event, it is a real highlight for small and large sports fans. Over 80 sports can be tried out, around 100 domestic associations present themselves,” emphasized Schmidt. Just a few days ago, the sports state secretary with ÖFB team boss Ralf Rangnick presented the expansion of the daily exercise unit in kindergartens and schools.
In addition to hands-on stations for children and adults, the focus was also on the honors: Numerous Austrian top athletes: inside, including the European Spear-throwing champion Victoria Hudson or the synchronized swimming world champions Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri, were recognized for their success. Dedicated volunteers who keep Austria’s sports clubs upset were also awarded.
There was a special offer in the lounge of the Ministry of Sports: Visitors could make a free fitness check inside.
“I am happy about the enormous interest! The day of sport impressively shows how diverse and successful sport in Austria is – and how great people’s interest,” says Schmidt.
