The big Austria-wide Greenpeace plastic check starts today. All people in Austria are warmly invited to take part and count local plastic waste for a week between October 14th and 27th, 2024. The collected data is then evaluated by Greenpeace experts. At the end, the extent of plastic pollution in Austria will be made clear and concrete solutions will be shown on how plastic waste can be reduced. All participants also receive a personal analysis of where their waste ends up.
Marc Dengler, Greenpeace spokesman: “Austria is suffocating in plastic waste. Tons of plastic packaging end up in our trash cans every day, but politicians still lack the necessary solutions. In order to finally provide clarity, Greenpeace is launching the big plastic check. For a week we will document the plastic waste in our households together – because this is the only way we can recognize the true dimension of this problem and demonstrate effective measures.”
Almost a million tons of plastic waste are generated in Austria every year, but only a quarter is recycled. So far there is no data about what types of plastic end up in domestic garbage cans. Greenpeace therefore invites everyone in Austria to take part in the plastic check. Those interested can register until October 20th Greenpeace-Website register. After registering, you receive a counting slip that is hung over your garbage bin at home for a week to record plastic packaging waste. The data is then transmitted to Greenpeace via QR code or online. Greenpeace experts analyze the results to find out which waste can be recycled and which can be avoided – with the aim of developing concrete recommendations for plastic reduction.
