The state championship in Standard Chess 2025 has been decided: Dominik Horvath (Burgenland) and Veronika Exler (Vienna) secure the Austrian championship titles. In the new tournament format with a round system, Horvath prevailed confidently and remains unbeaten across all games. He won the decisive victory in the final round against Olga Badelka-it is his first state championship title in the standard class.
For the women, the Viennese international Veronika Exler won after an exciting course and points in front of Katharina Katter from Styria and Emilia Deak-Sala from Vienna. The decision was only made in the second ranking, in which Exler narrowly had the front.
As part of the strongly occupied Oberbank Challenger Open, the Macedonian international champion Emil Risteski triumphed with 7.5 points. The three best Austrians – Lukas Leisch, Florian Schwabeneder and Stefan Kindermann – qualified for the 2026 state championship.
In total, more than 100 players took part in the Challenger. The new tournament format with round tournament and Challenger was received equally positively by participating and audience. The Oberbank Donau Forum in Linz offered a perfect stage for the highlight of the Austrian chess year with its air-conditioned gaming hall.
