In August, the Styrian Chamber of Labor collected the prices of 22 items needed to start school. A 19-piece school starter package consisting of a fountain pen, ink killer, pencils, colored pencils and felt-tip pens, Uhu Stic, opaque box, eraser, college pad, wax crayons etc. in specialist shops between 57.11 euros and 212.58 euros or in retail chains between 39 .94 euros and 241.79 euros. On average you have to pay 122.28 or 98.93 euros. The wide range of prices shows that price comparisons are worthwhile, especially for the more expensive items such as the Jolly Classic products: 24 pieces of colored pencils cost between 18.99 and 26.90 euros, 12 pieces cost between 10.49 and 15.99 euros or the 12-piece cover paint box 7.99 to 10.90 euros.

Compared to the previous year, prices rose by an average of 3.87 percent at specialist retailers and fell by around 6.66 percent at retail chains. The more moderate increase and decrease in prices is, on the one hand, the result of the strong price increase of 13 percent in the previous year, but on the other hand, this is the effect of the promotional prices, which are traditionally increasingly offered before the start of school. “It shows once again that a price comparison is essential for cost-effective purchases and that promotions are also easy on the wallet,” says Josef Kaufmann from AK market research.
Expensive school year
The current AK school cost study, in which hundreds of parents in Styria took part, also shows that attending school is a costly affair for families. Accordingly, Styrian parents spent an average of 243 euros on general school supplies (pencils, notebooks, etc.) and books in the past school year. The bottom line is that the average total expenditure for the school year – from school supplies to afternoon care and school trips – amounted to 3,027 euros per family.
