For four years, the Austrian Post has published the popular stamp series “Rare Lion Breeds”, which is devoted to endangered domestic animals. The motive is unfortunately more topical than ever: The Tyrolean Blobe goat only lives a small population that is currently threatened by the mouth and claw disease.
An originally planned breeding meeting in Imst was canceled for security reasons. The population of the blob goat is so endangered that an outbreak of the mouth and claw disease could lead to the final extinction of this livestock breed. For this reason, the special post office in which the stamp and animal would have been officially presented for the first time.
Even in a photo of the Blobe goat with “her” stamp was dispensed with for veterinary reasons, instead the Austrian Post has recovered an encounter between the goat and stamp with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).
The stamp designed by Kirsten Lubach shows a typical couple made of goat and buck with bluish colored fur and long horns in front of a pastel -colored background. The stamp has a nominal value of 1 euro (tariff: letter S) and appears in a circulation of 400,000 pieces. From tomorrow it will be in all post office, on onlineshop.post.at as well as available from the Austrian Post collector service (phone: +43 577 67-95095; email: sammler-service@post.at).
The blof goat
The Blobe goat is a mountain breed that is located in the border area between North and South Tyrol. It owes its name to the bluish coloring of her fur: “Blob” is Tyrolean for “blue”. The animals are medium -sized and stocky, their medium -length fur with poet undercoat protects them well from the extreme weather conditions in the high mountains, where the robust and resistant animals spend the summer months on the alpine pastures in 2,500 to 3,000 meters. Her hard claws provide sure -footedness in the steep rock area, the high -lying udder reduces the risk of injury in the alpine landscape. The no goats mostly have horns, with the goers also form a particularly strong horn.
The blof goat is a multi -use breed for milk and meat. The existence of this old Tyrolean goat breed is at risk and had shrunk to almost 60 animals in the early 2000s. In 2007, a group of breeders, together with the Tyrolean goat breeding association and the Arche Austria, started a conservation breeding program, which is continued by the “Blobe Goas Austria” association and numerous breeders. Today the population of the Blobe goat again comprises over 700 animals.
