SPW women: Around 280 women ran for Evelyn Regner and for a feminist Europe

Evelyn Regner and the SPÖ Vienna running team sent a strong signal for the equality of women across Europe at the Austrian women’s run

Vienna (OTS/SPW) With around 280 women taking part, the SPÖ Vienna team was the largest group in this year’s Austrian Women’s Run. Together, the Viennese Social Democratic team ran for a feminist, progressive and social Europe. The team, consisting of motivated, running-loving women, municipal and district councilors as well as committed members, was also welcomed on site by SPÖ Vienna regional party chairman Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig supports. ***

At the event, Evelyn Regner underlined the need for consistent European women’s policy: “Europe is facing many challenges due to inflation, the climate crisis or the danger of the advance of right-wing forces. Women are particularly affected by this. All the more reason for a feminist, social Europe in which every person has the chance of a good life.” A fair Europe would only exist with social democracy, Regner continued. “We showed how much we can change and improve in the last legislative period: Since then there has been more tax justice, fair wages, more security and, above all, more equality in Europe,” explained Regner. “We Social Democrats have always stood up for the rights of women. As a feminist, I am fighting in the EU Parliament for a European Charter of Women’s Rights so that standards for women’s rights can finally be set across Europe. We want every European woman to be able to live a self-determined life and make free decisions about her body! In addition to the long overdue ratification of the ILO 190 Convention against violence and harassment in the world of work, this also includes the fair distribution of public budget resources and equal health opportunities for women and men,” continued Regner.

State parliament member Marina Hanke, chairwoman of the Vienna SPÖ Women, also visited the Austrian women’s run and showed her full support for Evelyn Regner: “Especially in uncertain times like these, we need a united Europe that fights for peace and equality. Growing right-wing parties endanger peace and cohesion. This makes it all the more important that we also advance feminist politics in Europe. With Evelyn Regner, we have a feminist fighter on our side in one of the most important offices in Europe – and we look forward to her being able to continue this work for us in the future.”

SPÖ Vienna regional party chairman Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig, who was also a guest at the women’s run as a spectator, once again underlined Vienna’s pioneering role in women’s policy: “I am pleased that Vienna is once again hosting the Austrian women’s run. Vienna is the city of women and we work tirelessly to ensure that all women in our city can live well and independently. Whether in the area of work, education, health or protection against violence – we ensure equal opportunities for everyone. Our Viennese top candidate for the EU elections and Vice President of the EU Parliament, Evelyn Regner, is, however, the best representative of these concerns at the European level,” emphasized Ludwig in conclusion.
