SPÖ-Silvan for free vaccination against shingles – “Prevention instead of two-tier medicine”

SPÖ supports the Ombudsman’s demand – 500 euros for vaccination is unaffordable for many

Vienna (OTS/SK) Although the vaccination against shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is recommended for people aged 50 and over in the Ministry of Health’s national vaccination plan, you currently have to pay 500 euros for the vaccination. That’s why people keep reporting to the Ombudsman’s Office, reports SPÖ Ombudsman spokesman Rudolf Silvan. Already in December, Ombudsman Bernhard Achitz and the MP demanded that these costs be borne by the state, as no savings should be made in prevention. “A lower-threshold and, in this case, free vaccination offer would be a real step in the fight against two-tier medicine,” said Silvan, who is also a member of the National Council’s Health Committee, on the occasion of “Austrian Vaccination Day,” which takes place tomorrow, Saturday. ****

“Especially because of the government’s inaction against inflation, people are currently saving on paid preventive care services,” explains Silvan. He therefore hopes that the government will take up this proposal quickly.

Shingles is caused by viruses that are often transmitted in childhood. It usually occurs in older people or people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women and immunocompromised people also have an increased risk, which could be significantly reduced with the highly effective vaccination. When the disease occurs, severe pain and a skin rash with blisters usually occur. In the worst case, herpes zoster, as shingles is known in the medical field, can lead to blindness. (End) wf/up
