SPÖ-Leichtfried: Lopatka’s assurances of not working with the FPÖ do not stand up to the reality check

The EPP and Von der Leyen have repeatedly made common cause with the right-wing extremists – a “Europe first” pact is necessary for growth, jobs and security of supply

Vienna (OTS/SK) SPÖ European spokesman Jörg Leichtfried considers the assurances of VP-EU lead candidate Lopatka that he does not want to work with the FPÖ at EU level to be “completely unbelievable. “That doesn’t stand up to the reality check, I see it the same way as our SPÖ top candidate. Andreas Schieder explained in the ORF press hour today that the EPP and the EPP Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have repeatedly made common cause with right-wing extremists,” explains Leichtfried. The SPÖ spokesman for Europe also underlines Schieder’s call for a “Europe first” pact for growth, jobs and security of supply. “If we want to maintain and expand our social standards in Europe, there is no way around it,” Leichtfried is convinced. ****

Von der Leyen has repeatedly made concessions to the proponents of right-wing politics, such as Hungary’s Orban. “The EPP and its Commission President have always been prepared to compromise and veer towards the far right on questions of human and civil rights as well as abortion. But just a look at Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Salzburg shows that the ÖVP always likes to assert before the election that it will not work with the FPÖ, but then does so after the election,” says Leichtfried. If you don’t want to work with the FPÖ, if you don’t want a right-wing turn in Europe, you have to vote for the SPÖ. “Only a strong social democracy in Europe can prevent Europe from shifting to the right,” emphasizes Leichtfried.
