She wants to “not be reduced” that she is the first German woman in space, says Rabea Rogge. The 29-year-old electrical engineer is part of the Fram2 mission as a pilot, which started on Monday evening (local time) from the Kennedy Space Center in the US state of Florida.

The mission led by a Bitcoin billionaire, named after the ship of the polar researcher Fridtjof Nansen, is characterized by an unusual orbit over the two poles. From a height of around 450 kilometers, the newly found steve phenomenon is to be researched, a purple colored ribbon of northern lights, which is presumably due to local warming of particles in the ionosphere. At the same time, the adaptation of people to extreme environments is to be examined on the 86-hour flight on board the Space-X capsule.

Rogge came into contact with the topic of space travel through a satellite project at the university. Born in Berlin, she studied electrical engineering at ETH Zurich and is currently doing his doctorate at the University of Trondheim in Norway via autonomous boats in the Arctic Sea. Robotics in extreme situations are their real interest. While critics speak away from “space tourism”, Rogge sees the change in space travel the chance that the security standards of the state and innovation speed of the private sector will complement each other.

Personally, she is happy to be “at a critical point where space becomes more inclusive”, as she says. She wants to share her enthusiasm with women in technical professions and, if they are still confronted with doubts, “encourage and empower and empower them.

The “nd” remains. Thanks to them.

The Nd. cooperative belongs to our readers and authors. With the cooperative, we guarantee the independence of our editorial team and try to make all of our texts accessible – even if you have no money to get our work with you.

We have no hard paywall on the website out of conviction. But that also means that we all who can make a contribution must always ask for financing our journalism from the left. That costs nerves, and not just our reader, our author also becomes too much from time to time.

Nevertheless: Only together can we defend left -wing points of view!

With your support we can still:

→ offer independent and critical reporting.
→ cover topics that are overlooked elsewhere.
→ create a platform for diverse and marginalized voices.
→ Write to false information and hate speech.
→ Accompany and deepen social debates from the left.

Be part of the solidarity financing and support the “ND” with a contribution of your choice. Together we can create a media landscape that is independent, critical and accessible to everyone.
