Solidarity sets a precedent: collection campaign for needy students | City vienna

Drop off school supplies in the 1st and 7th districts by June 24th

Vienna (OTS) “Every project that is implemented with the Children and Youth Million shows us anew what is important to young people in this city. Solidarity is particularly important to them. With the fundraising campaign, together we are creating more opportunities for all children and young people in Vienna “, says Deputy Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr.

He is referring to one of the many ideas that were chosen last year as part of the Children and Youth Million. The “Solidarity Makes School” initiative aims to collect school supplies for needy students. The Chamber of Labor also published last year that school supplies had become more expensive by an average of 6.3 percent in paper retailers and by 9.6 percent in retail chains. Starting school therefore represents a significant financial burden for many families.

“We collect everything that students need for a good start to the new school year – from school bags to glue to pencil pens. Please only donate items that are as good as new and in good condition. Personal messages, such as motivating learning tips, are also welcome,” explains Vucko Schüchner, Wienxtra Managing Director. The project is being realized with the support of Wiener Volkshilfe. “Every fifth child in Austria is at risk of poverty. It is clear to us: No child should grow up in poverty!” explains Tanja Wehsely, Managing Director of Volkshilfe Wien. “Thank you very much to all donors. Every school item donated goes directly to students affected by poverty.”

School supplies that are in good condition or are new can be dropped off at two locations: Wienxtra-Jugendinfo (1st, Babenbergerstraße 1) and Wienxtra-Kinderinfo (7th, Museumsquartier 2). At the end of June, all donated school supplies will be distributed to needy students via the district Volkshilfe associations, which will make the costly start to school significantly easier for many families.

Schools are also taking part in the campaign: In the last few weeks until the summer holidays, students from MS in Krim (1190 Vienna), MS Willergasse 55 (1230 Vienna) and BRG Seestadt (1220 Vienna) are busy collecting their donations Schools. In addition, workshops on the topic of child poverty in Austria are held in selected classes to raise awareness.

About the million children and young people

With the “Solidarity goes to school” fundraising campaign, 8 of the 20 winning projects of the participatory Children and Youth Million 2021 have been realized. In autumn 2023, the City of Vienna announced the Children and Youth Million for the second time and received great ideas from young Viennese. The online vote is currently underway as to which projects should be implemented this time with a city budget of one million euros. All Viennese aged 5 to 20 have the opportunity until June 14, 2024 junges.wien.gv.at to vote for their favorite projects.

The Children and Youth Million is part of “Young Vienna”, the city of Vienna’s children and youth strategy, which aims to make Vienna the most child and youth friendly city in the world. The initiative is organized and implemented by Wienxtra.
