Expansion record: 2024 Austria’s largest nationwide fast charging network has grown by around 250 ultra-fast charging points. By the end of 2025, a total of at least 200 additional high power charging points will be available in the SMATRICS EnBW charging network, exceeding the 600 mark. The need for public charging options is unbroken, says Thomas Landsbek, CEO of SMATRICS EnBW: “We’re going to need every plug we can get. Especially in larger cities or for people who travel a lot, there is no alternative to a quick charging stop every now and then.”
Speed and price transparency are required when e-charging
SMATRICS EnBW is further expanding the fast charging network with high-performance HPC charging points with an output of up to 400 kW. With these ultra-fast chargers, electricity can be charged for up to 400 kilometers in 15 minutes. While at least four charging points were previously set up per location, the trend since 2024 has been towards charging parks with at least twelve charging points. Last year, SMATRICS EnBW already put several of these parks into operation, for example in St. Veit and Poggersdorf (Carinthia), St. Pölten (Lower Austria) and Vorchdorf (Upper Austria). This year, additional charging parks will be added in Regau and Suben (Upper Austria), Spielberg (Styria) and Altlengbach (Lower Austria). In addition to the state-of-the-art charging infrastructure, the parks are equipped with roofs and some with solar systems.
From 2025, SMATRICS EnBW will also rely on transparent pricing for its charging parks. This is comparable to the signage at conventional gas stations and shows the ad hoc price per kilowatt hour on a daily basis. This means that e-mobilists receive clear and comprehensible price information before charging – as is currently the case via the app. “The price labeling enables even inexperienced e-mobilists to get a quick overview and reduces uncertainty.”
said Hauke Hinrichs, COO of SMATRICS EnBW.
Perfectly integrated into everyday life – retail remains an important partner
Landsbek explains the importance of retailers for e-mobility as follows: “For retailers, adding e-charging infrastructure to their own services is an important step in positioning themselves for the future. We are therefore continuing to expand our collaboration. Customers can therefore connect the store and shopping conveniently and reliably.”
SMATRICS EnBW currently has around 250 charging points available from trading partners. 34 locations will be added by the end of 2025. The electricity to operate the charging stations comes from 100 percent renewable energy from VERBUND.
