Shoulder the slats and put them in the basement: Markus Eisenbichler stops

The Planica giant hill is just the right stage for Markus Eisenbichler this weekend to end his great career. The German record world champion celebrated his first World Cup victory here in Slovenia, where he set up the German ski flight record twice at 248 meters. Flying from the largest bakken in the world has always been the greatest passion of Bavaria, which was always a little different from all the other (well -behaved) German ski jumpers.
“Of course I was always very stubborn – but also very strict to myself,” says Eisenbichler. Often in his career he wanted his head through the wall. This gave his home trainer Christian Leitner “very, many gray hair”, as Eisenbichler grants. Even with the former national coach Werner Schuster, the headstrong man from Siegsdorf often rattled. However, he also celebrated his greatest success among him – Eisenbichler won three titles at the 2019 World Championships.
“The nice thing with Christian Leitner and the Schuster Werner is that you sit down again after the argument and then it is good again,” says Eisenbichler. This no longer worked with today’s national coach Stefan Horngacher from 2019. The Austrian, which was known as a hardliner, often did not accept the man’s extra tours, which was blessed in a German team with the greatest flight talent, which was more likely to jump on the jump. Especially in the last two winters, it went further down to the freedom-loving Eisenbichler, who was usually only allowed to start in the second-class Continental Cup.

The World Cup became a roller coaster ride for its German colleagues this winter. The outstanding start to the season with Pius Paschke was a serious two -month crisis. It was only at the World Cup in Trondheim that the German ski jumper with silver from the normal hill through Andreas Wellinger made their way back to the top of the world. And because of the manipulation scandal of the Norwegians, silver could still become gold. To do this, Norwegian world champion Marius Lindvik, which was already convicted of fraud, would have to be disqualified.
“You have to understand the whole situation and see when this manipulation started. The decisions will then be very consistent, «Sandro Pertile had announced as racing director World Association FIS. The results of the external investigation commission are to be presented in summer. Then, in addition to gold for Wellinger, after three fourth places at the World Cup, it is also three additional German medals.
Eisenbichler will not care more or less. Peded by latent knee and back pain, the Olympics were not even enough motivation to continue in the coming winter. And he is already looking forward to the time without ski jumping: »After the sporting career, life really really gets going for us athletes. There is no training plan. I can come home when I want. I can eat when I want and even enjoy giving me a schnitzel, although it is not my favorite dish. I am bird -free and can just do what I feel like. “
After the World Cup final, Eisenbichler will go to Norway for cross-country skiing, after which a ski tour from Chamonix to Zermatt is planned. After the well -deserved break with friends, he will continue his professional career at the Bad Endorf sports school. He wants to be preserved for ski jumping – preferably as a trainer: »I have experienced a lot of ups and downs and may be able to keep one or the other young athletes from problems. I could also imagine working as an expert. ”In private, he wants to build a house and also think about the founding of a family when he hits the right woman.
Like his colleague Stephan Leyhe, Eisenbichler is happy to go into his athlete’s pension – but also with concerns about the future of German ski jumping: »Unfortunately, we don’t have as many talents as Austria. It is sobering that I am the best German in the Continental Cup at almost 34. Of course that worries me. “
