SJ stitch on Nehammer’s housing plans: “The sell-off of non-profit housing is a Trojan horse for young people!”

Socialist Youth resolutely opposes ÖVP proposals

Vienna (OTS) “It is laudable to want to create the conditions so that young people can build something for themselves. However, the ÖVP’s policies have always had the opposite effect in recent decades. Karl Nehammer’s latest venture also falls into this category. If you want to create affordable housing for young people, you have to promote non-profit housing and put speculators in their place. Spending public money on housing that is subsequently privatized certainly does not ensure that housing remains affordable in the long term!“, says Paul Stich, chairman of the Socialist Youth Austria (SJ) in view of Chancellor Nehammer’s latest proposals.

Stich supports this using an international example. “Towards the end of the 20th century, public housing was sold on a large scale in Britain. As a result, these were no longer available specifically for those (young) people who would have needed affordable living space to move out. The result today is that the desire to own a home has become an illusion for ordinary people in Britain. What was a short-term treat became a burden for all subsequent generations. If the ÖVP wants to have such conditions in Austria too, it can no longer be helped. We are definitely not playing along with this deception!“, says Stich in conclusion.
