Sima/Nevrivy/Pipal-Leixner: Mega-Rad-Highway finished-7 km pure driving pleasure from the city to Kagraner Platz

Finally the time has come: the Radhighway Nord, Vienna’s 7 -kilometer long -class bike connection, is ready! The driving pleasure begins at Urania, runs over Aspernbrücke and Praterstrasse to the Praterstern, from there via Lassallestrasse and Wagramer Straße to the Kagraner Platz and beyond to the long field. Together, the new quick route connects three districts and makes the bike connection from the city safely, comfortably and, above all, fast. This state -of -the -art route not only sets new standards for Vienna bicycle traffic, it also brings extensive greening, removal and cooling along the route – according to the Vienna -wide motto “Out of the asphalt”.

“I am very pleased that we were able to finish Vienna’s first Mega-Radhighway with the last section on Wagramer Straße. A real showcase project of the large cycle path offensive, as part of which we have built or launched almost 100 km in the past 5 years. At the same time, we remove, green and cool according to our motto ‘Out of the asphalt and along the routes and An adjoining places – there are a total of 16,000 m2 and around 200 trees along the route were newly planted. The Grande Finale of the Remodeling of Wagramer Straße becomes Vienna’s first street park, which will be ready by autumn: a new freedom at 250 m with almost 40 trees in the last section of Wagramer Straße between Steigenteschgasse and Wintzingerodestrasse.

The Donaustädter district head Ernst Nevrivy is also enthusiastic about the new bike connection, but above all from the transformation of Wagramer Straße: “The Danube residents can now look forward to 8,100 square meters on new green areas with 100 new trees and 60 high -stem shrubs.”

“I am proud of what we have already succeeded in expanding the bike paths-new bike paths are always a highlight. And a seven-kilometer long bike highway, that is a perfect example of noticeable progress in everyday life. As a upswing coalition, it is our goal to show that every day we are working on the fact that our city is becoming more modern and future-oriented,” emphasizes Neos mobility spokeswoman Angelika Pipal-Leixner.

1. Section Praterstrasse: from Urania to Praterstern

The Mega-Rad Highway starts in the Vienna City, at Urania. Here is first on the Aspern Bridge over the Danube Canal. The Aspern Bridge, built in 1951, is a high -frequency connection between Leopoldstadt and 1st district. In 2023, bridge equipment and corrosion protection were renewed as part of a general renovation. In the course of this renovation, the Aspernbrücke received a two-direction cycle path through which it continues in Aspernbrückengasse and Praterstrasse to the Praterstern. On the first section of the Mega-Rad Highway, it cycles all over 4 meters wide. 51 new trees and 18 high -end bushes together with the existing large -scale plane trees, which of course have been preserved as part of the redesign, ensure shadow. Aspernbrückengasse and Praterstrasse became a bicycle fieldorado and a green gate in Leopoldstadt. The Nestroyplatz and the Rosl-Berndt-Platz also received a climate-like makeover and offer a lot of stay in the gear and water elements with trees, grass beds, light paving and water elements.

“In order to make cycling-but also to walk-over the Praterstern-the important intersection of Praterstern/Nordbahnstraße was recently redesigned. So far, pedestrians and cyclists have had to share a very narrow installation area. Cycling in the intersection is possible.

2. Section Lassallestrasse: From Praterstern to Reichsbrücke

The next section of the Mega-Rad-Highway runs on Lassallestrasse. From the Praterstern to the Reichsbrücke, a two-direction cycle path over 4 meters wide was created. In order to increase security, the new two-direction cycle path was built so that it does not border on any parking strips. In this way, accidents can be prevented as possible through carelessly opened car doors.

A total of 36 trees and 11 indoor shrubs were newly planted in Lassallestraße and a total of 1,300 square meters of new green areas were built.

In the crossing areas with Vorgartenstraße, Radingerstraße, Ernst-Melchior-Gasse and Joseph-Roth-Gasse, sidewalks were built to shorten the crossing lengths and to increase safety for pedestrians. At the crossings, attention was paid to a clear separation of pedestrians and bicycle traffic. The pedestrians were enlarged around the subway entrance at Radingerstrasse and upgraded with new seating. In this area, bright and seepage -capable pavement ensures a total of 420 square meters, which relieves the sewage system and water can be stored for subsequent evaporation and cooling in the soil.

Whether on the bike or on foot, the redesigned Lassallestrasse has something to offer for everyone!

3. Section Wagramer Straße: From Arbeiterstrandbadstraße to Kagraner Platz

The Mega-Rad-Highway runs out of the city out of the city via the existing mixed walking and cycle paths of the Reichsbrücke, where it turns into Wagramer Straße.

In 2023, a 4-meter-wide, comfortable two-direction cycle path was opened here from the Arbeiterstrandbadstraße via the Kagran bridge to the Danube Center, which has since ensured driving comfort and safety. 36 new trees and new green spaces along the route cool and donate shadows during the hot months.

The last section now extends the mega-wheel highway from the Danube Center to Kagraner Platz by another 1.2 kilometers! The comfortable two-orientation cycle path between Siebeckstraße and Kagraner Platz or beyond the long field closes a gap in the Vienna main bike path network and not only enables the city center and the Danube center, but also the local recreation areas of Danube Island and Old Danube.

According to the motto “Get out of the asphalt”, as part of the redesign of this section of the Wagramer Straße, of course, large -scale greening was also set in order to create a climate shape for all road participants. Specifically, 8,100 square meters of new green areas with 100 new trees and 60 high -bust wheels were created along Wagramer Straße.

Vienna’s large cycle path offensive

The large Viennese cycle path offensive is in full swing! At the end of the legislative period, the red-pink city government has already started over 250 projects and is intensively implementing further. By the end of the year, 100 km of new cycle paths will be built or brought on the way in the main bike path network. More than 50 km of cycling infrastructure has also been implemented in the district network. The intensive efforts pay off: the number of cyclists is constantly increasing. The proportion of the paths that are covered by bike rose to eleven percent in 2024 (in 2019 it was seven percent), as the modal split survey 2024 shows.
