Now it has been done: the transformation of Thaliastraße into an open-air-well-being living room is accomplished. According to the motto “Get out of the asphalt”, the 2.8 kilometer -long Thaliastraße was sealed in three stages, greened and cooled. The result is impressive: the most important shopping street from Ottakring and important transport connection from Wilhelminenberg to the center radiates in new splendor.
Hundreds of new trees have been planted and will ensure valuable shade and climate -friendly greening in the future. 2,800 square meters of new green space were conjured up in the 16th district. 26 drinking fountains and 41 fog steles offer sufficient water supply with high -quality spring water and a cooling shower, especially on the hot summer days. Bright paving and additional green areas not only optically upgraded Thaliastraße, but also improve the quality of stay and the microclimate. This makes the road a real climate turkey for shopping, strolling and relaxing on hundreds of new seats without compulsory consumption.
“The climate crossing transformation of Thaliastraße into a Klimaboulevard is a particularly beautiful example from our ‘out of the asphalt’ family. We have also widened the walking gear to 6 meters and thus the strolling is now a pleasure. That is a massive improvement in the quality of stay and the micro climate,” says planning city councilor Ulli Sima.
“The ongoing exchange with the residents, users and business people is very important to us to know the different usage requirements. With the new, modern Thaliastraße, there is also more quality of stay for the needs of Ottakring: shady seating under the new trees invite you to rest, while the children also enjoy the water feature. The picture of the modern climate stroke, ”said Stefanie Lamp, district manager of Ottakring.
The redesign measures in the area of Lerchenfeld belt to Johann-Staud-Straße took a total of four years. The third and last section was at 550 meters from Huttengasse. A big plus for the quality of stay along the entire Klimaboulevard is traffic calming and attracting numerous side ends of Thaliastrasse. The redesign of Thaliastraße was co -financed by the European Fund for Regional Development.
More driving comfort and security
In those crossing of Thaliastraße, in which it was not yet allowed and the street space allowed, cycling against the one -way was made possible. Traffic safety was also improved by road beams on all ampellics to the Thaliastraße. In addition, the side strip along the tram tracks was renewed: instead of concrete slabs, a seamless asphalt covering now ensures noticeably better driving comfort. In addition, numerous new bike parking systems were built that contribute to climate -friendly mobility.
Thaliastraße part of the record greening
Thaliastraße is one of a total of 344 out of the asphalt projects in all 23 districts in the last legislative period from 2020-2025. For this, the 100 million funding pot of the “livable climate pattern city” was exploited entirely. The impressive numbers speak for themselves:
