The City of Vienna supports the conversion of apartments, private homes and allotment houses for Viennese aged 60 and over that are used as their main residence. This includes installations and structural measures that make age-appropriate and barrier-free living easier.
Specifically, these are measures that are defined according to ÖNORM B 1600: for example, barrier-free access through a ramp, stair lifts, motorized door opening aids or, in the sanitary area, room enlargements, floor-level showers, wheelchair-accessible washbasins, load-bearing walls for installing support and grab bars as well as shower seats and thermostatic fittings .
“In order to be able to live independently into old age, you also need the right living environment. Sooner or later, many people will be faced with the question of what adjustments are necessary within their own four walls so that their home meets changing needs even as they get older. This could, for example, be the installation of a barrier-free, floor-level shower in the bathroom. Structural adjustments that make a big difference to your daily quality of life, but also to your own safety and health. Adapting the living space to your needs should not fail due to financial hurdles. That is why the City of Vienna supports measures for age-appropriate, barrier-free renovations. The information point of the responsible municipal departments is also available to provide advice on technical questions,” says Vice Mayor and Housing Councilor Kathrin Gaál.
An amount of 35 percent of the proven eligible costs (up to 4,200 euros) can be paid out for age-appropriate conversions. The income limits of the WWFSG apply to social accuracy (§ 11 Vienna Housing Promotion and Renovation Act, for one person this is 41,140 euros, for two people 61,310 euros annual household income)
The average funding amount paid out for such adjustments is 3,041 euros. By far the most frequently funded renovations are in the sanitary area (floor-level shower, door widening, toilet with support and grab bars), followed by stair lifts in apartments.
