Shift in autumn

Unusual perspectives away from usual places and the artistic examination of current sociopolitical issues are the focus of the projects that are supported in the current edition of Shift, the promotion program of the City of Vienna for the free art and cultural scene. The funded projects work collaboratively and transdisciplinary with different communities, question existing balance of power and strengths that are often marginalized in cultural business.

“Shift – which means literally means’ – promotes projects like this that does not necessarily provide all the answers, but ask new questions and encourage you to think about living together in the city. The events in autumn give a little insight into what is moving in the current, sixth edition of the program – and maybe also shifts.” – Bettina Lauß, Shift project manager

As part of a press tour, three collectives introduced themselves on Wednesday and gave an insight into their work: the Sapphic Art Bar Last Little Haven artistically deals with a little-known chapter of lesbian history and is a tribute to the (almost forgotten) world of lesbian, sapphian and dyke bars from the 1930s to 1950s. A former jewelry store on Gumpendorfer Straße offers the appropriate space for a community space that will open on October 25th. With the LOUD & PROUD Brings the collective Heavy Lezzers – Cult of Heavy Metal Lesbians and Allies am 21. & 22. November a new metal festival to Vienna and opens feminist, queer rooms in the heavy metal culture. The performative bus tour of the MA35 and Friends makes the often invisible reality of migration -political bureaucracy experienced by Friday and visible their violent hurdles.

“What connects the projects is not a uniform style or access, but the will to tell other stories, open rooms with artistic means and to work decentrally, on the edges of established cultural practices.” – Bettina Lauß, Shift project manager

Until June next year, various collectives and clubs will realize 28 projects throughout Vienna as part of the 6th Shift Edition. Selected from several hundred submissions by an independent jury of experts, they deal with cultural developments and topics in many ways that are often not the focus of public discourse:
