Michael Stuefer, Managing Director of Biofuel Express Austria, one of the largest providers in Austria for the fossil-free fuel HVO100, demands rapid measures from the EU after the biodiesel scandal in Germany.
“Unfortunately, it is sad reality that, through questionable imports from third countries, the biodiesel used in Europe is not always 100 percent green. Of course, it is also that black sheep work with fake certificates here and there and therefore do not sell what they promise. The image of the entire industry is destroyed by both methods. Supplier up to tracking through the Union database, ”says Stuefer.
A rigorous approach at European level has to happen quickly: “It is five after twelve, because more and more imports with fake biodiesel are flooding Europe – and that harms everyone who adheres to the rules of the game. The EU must finally get out here. That means rigorous import controls and finally the optimization of the Union database,” says Stuefer.
The Union database (UDB) is fundamentally a good idea, as the register of improving the traceability of biofuels and other renewable fuels should serve. However, there are currently still problems with the implementation, especially in the case of intergovernmental imports. Stuefer: “In principle, the register helps to prevent the sale of sustainability evidence. However, a register in theory helps little if it is not implemented correctly, the teething problems have to be finally remedied,” says Stuefer.
For his company Biofuel Express Austria and the main supplier Neste, Stuefer puts his hand in the fire: “HVO from Biofuel is 100 percent trackable and ISCC certified. We can use our sustainability system Insight Guarantee that the raw materials and output materials used in the fuels are possible. This means that we offer a detailed insight into the supply chain and the product life cycle. Thus, with the HVO we deliver, the CO₂ savings can be proven certified. ”
