Shanghai Electric accelerates development of hydrogen energy chain and promotes adoption of clean energy

Shanghai Electric (“the Company”) (SEHK:2727, SSE:601727) announced that it has launched its latest alkaline Z-series electrolyzer technology has taken another significant step towards reducing the overall cost of green hydrogen, an energy-saving innovation that breaks the renewable energy bottleneck and makes zero-emission hydrogen production more economically sustainable.

  • Shanghai Electric is focused on integrating wind, solar, storage and hydrogen – a key strategy for expanding clean energy applications in the future.

The solution, which further advances the decarbonization of industry, complements Shanghai Electric’s expertise in innovative new energies and enables industrial applications of green hydrogen by enabling the use of hydrogen in chemistry, transportation, steelmaking and… Green energy storage accelerated.

“Hydrogen production involves multiple segments and a long industrial chain, with cost being the main challenge. Green hydrogen is more expensive than gray hydrogen and requires solutions for production, storage, refueling and usage. Our goal is to streamline the entire technology chain and reduce costs across the industry,” said Wu Liang, chief engineer of Shanghai Bright-H Technology Co., Ltd.

Green hydrogen, the cleanest form of hydrogen, is emerging as a critical solution in the global push for renewable energy and decarbonization, but the overall economic viability of its production, storage, fueling and use is currently a major barrier to development. Shanghai Bright-H Technology Co., Ltd. (“Bright-H Technology”), a subsidiary of Shanghai Electric, focuses on the problems and technological challenges of the industry and addresses the key links in the hydrogen energy development chain.

By researching the alkaline water electrolysis and the Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis Bright-H Technology is dedicated to providing customers with integrated “production-storage-fuel utilization” system solutions, achieving breakthroughs in green chemistry, steelmaking, transportation and energy storage.

Shanghai Electric is focusing on hydrogen as part of its technological efforts to push the boundaries of clean energy innovation. Since 2015, the company has continued to develop hydrogen production technology and explore its commercial applications in conjunction with other energy sources. Shanghai Electric’s ongoing efforts have enabled the company to spearhead a number of pilot projects, putting the company at the forefront of hydrogen energy innovation as it seeks to integrate the clean energy source into a broader energy ecosystem.

For hydrogen production, Shanghai Electric has explored two technological paths and used its technological advantages to build an industrial chain. In June 2023, Shanghai Electric independently manufactured and launched an alkaline electrolyzer with a capacity of 2000 Nm³/h – at that time, this was the largest hydrogen production facility in China. In October 2023, the company launched a megawatt-scale PEM electrolyzer with a capacity of 200 Nm³/h, which leads China in terms of total output and is more suitable for hydrogen refueling stations due to its compact, lightweight and flexible design.

Shanghai Electric has also developed high-pressure hydrogen storage and offers diaphragm compressors for hydrogen refueling, while the company is exploring hydrogen applications such as green chemistry and hydrogen-blended gas turbines. In November 2023, the company tested a hydrogen gas turbine with a hydrogen volume fraction of over 7% at the Datang Haikou Power Plant, the first operational F-class project in China. In addition, hydrogen admixtures of up to 30% can be achieved with the DeNox burner developed by Shanghai Electric.

To date, Shanghai Electric has completed hydrogen projects in energy, transportation and chemicals, making it a leader in developing sustainable energy solutions and promoting innovation in clean hydrogen. The integrated wind power and biomass green methanol demonstration project in Taonan is expected to produce one million tons of green methanol annually in three phases. The first phase aims to develop a 250,000 tonne green methanol project from wind and biomass, supported by an installed capacity of 680,000 kilowatts of renewable energy.

Bright-H Technology’s zero-carbon demonstration project represents a breakthrough in the development and commercialization of hydrogen energy technology, integrating renewable energy generation, PEM water electrolysis for hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and fuel cells. The electricity generated by the project will be generated from renewable energy sources, with fuel cells providing additional energy during times of low demand.
