ORF filmmakers Petschl and Steinlechner: “mouthpiece for freedom, passion and human connection”
“With ‘Shake Stew – Jazz for Everyone’ we are embarking on a captivating journey through the pulsating world of jazz. This music is more than just an art form – it is a universal voice for freedom, passion and human connection. Our goal is to bring the audience closer to not only the musical brilliance behind Shake Stew, but also the deep emotional resonance that jazz can evoke in people’s hearts,” say ORF filmmakers Dietmar Petschl and Siegfried Steinlechner about their joint project.
“Jazz is challenging, complex and full of tension. But jazz can also be really fun and extremely sensual. Shake Stew is the best example of this. And our film clearly expresses that – a musical road movie with courageous nuances and joyful border crossings,” announces ORF-TV head of culture Martin Traxl.
Multimedia program focus for “International Jazz Day”
The approximately 45-minute TV production “Shake Stew – Jazz for All” on ORF 2 marks the start of a multimedia ORF jazz focus of the annual “International Jazz Day” on April 30th, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2012, with which this Music genre is honored in its astonishing diversity, but also in its function as a bridge builder between different cultures and continents.
For the eighth time, Ö1 is celebrating this occasion with a whole “Ö1 Jazz Day”, which focuses on Austrian and international jazz from early in the morning until late at night.
Ö1 program director Silvia Lahner: “’You can’t get rid of jazz, even if you wanted to.’ A quote attributed to composer and jazz pianist Herbie Hancock. Since 2011 he has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue at UNESCO’s International Jazz Day. This year on April 30th the Ö1 motto is: Clear the stage for the Ö1 Jazz Day. A bow to all the musicians who have dedicated their careers to this incomparable style of music. In addition, the winner of the Ö1 Jazz Scholarship 2024 will be announced on Ö1 Jazz Day.”
ORF III will also be presenting the highlights of this musical symposium on television with the program “International Music Forum Ossiach 1968” (Saturday April 27th, 3:10 a.m.), in which jazz legend Friedrich Gulda was one of the main initiators.
The ORF.at network, including ORF Topos and ORF SOUND, is dedicated to International Jazz Day 2024 as part of its current reporting. All programs in the program focus for which the corresponding online license rights exist will be available on ORF ON and in the ORF TVthek app and will be combined in their own video collection.
