The AIDS help Vienna calls for the Sexual health on September 4.9. A national strategy and sustainable support. Because a new study shows that despite the great need for discussion, knowledge, sensitivity and structure are missing in medical practice.
Sexual health is a human right and crucial for physical, psychological and social well -being. In Austria, however, it often remains unnoticed: low -threshold access to advice, tests or treatment, conversations on sexuality in healthcare are rare, and prejudices or stigmatization prevent people from helping. For the World Day of Sexual Health on September 4th, the AIDS Aid Hilfo Vienna, under the motto “Lust for speech. Together for sexual health”, determines determined action of politics and society – with education, low -threshold offers and protective measures that prevent infections, health damage and discrimination.
Study shows urgent need for action
A current survey of Austria’s AIDS aids as part of the campaign lust for speeches illustrates: While 83 % of the interviewed conversations about sexuality with doctors are important, over a quarter has never had such a conversation. Only 20 % report that the topic of medical staff is actively addressed. In addition, advice on sexually transmitted infections (STI) is inadequate, although infections such as syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia in Austria and Europe increase.
The responsibility is often due to the patients who are silent due to shame, time pressure or fear of discrimination due to an HIV infection. And this fear is entirely justified: Around 70 % of documented discrimination against people with HIV 2024 occurred in healthcare – from refused treatment to pejorative behavior.
“Enlightenment and safe advice are crucial to protect people with HIV on the one hand and to enable everyone to act self -determined in questions of sexual health on the other hand
“, Emphasizes Dr.in Mirijam Hall, chair of the AIDS help Vienna.
Political responsibility and clear demands
The Gender Health Report 2024 also confirms the relevance of sexual and reproductive health, but also shows its lack of structural anchoring in Austria. The AIDS help Vienna therefore demands:
· A national overall strategy for sexual health,
· Better training and awareness of doctors and therapists regarding sexual health,
· Land-covering low-threshold offers for advice and Sti-tests,
· Well -founded data collection,
· As well as discriminatory -free spaces in healthcare.
“It is high time for a clear political commitment. Only if prevention, diagnostics and advice are strengthened and existing institutions are supported in the long term, we can jointly secure the sexual health of the population”
so Hall.
AIDS aid to Austria as an indispensable partner
With its “Lust for Talking” campaign by the AIDS aids of Austria, supported by the umbrella organization of social security institutions and the planned outpatient outpatient health from 2026, the AIDS Aid Vienna, in turn, takes concrete steps to create and close gaps in conversation. “We are ready to improve health care together with politics and society. Sexual health must not remain a border issue – it is a central component for all people in Austria,” concluded Hall.
