Every year the Viennese health promotion-WIG organizes the popular day of action “Sex in the City-Hall” in the Vienna City Hall and thus sets a strong sign of sexual health of young people. This week the time had come again: Around 1,000 young people and 120 accompanying persons from a wide variety of Viennese schools and institutions of extra -curricular youth work took part and dealt with topics such as love, relationships, role models and contraception. “When it comes to sexuality, young people often feel curiosity as shame. Events such as ‘Sex in the City-Hall’ are all the more important, in which young people get space for questions and age-appropriate, well-prepared information from experts,” explains Peter Hacker, City Councilor for Social Affairs, Health and Sport. The lively participation of around 1000 Viennese young people was particularly pleased Dennis Beck, Managing Director of Vienna’s health promotion – WIG: “It was nice to see how many young people have informed and brought in. Our concept is designed in such a way that they feel comfortable and in a safe and confidential framework.
Sex myths, body knowledge & period quiz: age-appropriate hands-on program for young people
A colorful, interactive program invited the young people to learn more about sexual health, to visit workshops and to speak openly about topics they concern them. Numerous experts on site- AIDS help Vienna, Autonomous Austrian women’s shelters (AöF) / Stop- districts without partner power, courage, Dillinger Anna, Erdbeerwoche GmbH, First Love Mobil (ÖGF), health service of the City of Vienna (MA 15), midwife center, hotline for eating disorders, Institute for Women’s and Male Health, Institute for Sexual Pedagogy and Sex therapies, Lindner Cornelia, Lou-collective for sex education, springboard for girls*and young women*, Association Poika, Rat on Wraht, Rosalinda, Viennese anti-discrimination agency for LGBTIQ+matters (WAST) and the Vienna program for women’s health-had an open ear for the 13- to 19-year-old pupils and were answered. Not only the information stands, but also the stage lectures and taster workshops ensured a varied program. Sex myths around contraception, sexual orientation and pornography were examined, LGBTIQ+topics were discussed and in a period quiz the participants were able to determine how well they are already familiar with menstruation and female cycle. Even after initial shyness, the young Viennese quickly made trust, let their thoughts run free and experienced a special and varied event.
