In Pakistan, the situation in the flood areas is becoming increasingly threatening. The eastern province of Punjab currently hits the heaviest flood disaster in its history. After the devastating floods there with more than four million affected people and over 1,400 flooded villages, the concern is now aimed at the neighboring province of Sindh. There is a risk that an additional 1.6 million people can lose their entire belongings.
“The floods not only threaten the lives of millions of people, but also destroy their economic existence. Pakistan is already one of the countries that are most affected by climate change. Without international solidarity, people cannot cope with this catastrophe,” says Isabel Bogorinsky, program manager of Welthungerhilfe in Pakistan.
Due to the approaching threat to the residents in the province of Sindh, Welthungerhilfe with its local partners is already active and provides foreseeable help. Particularly endangered families were evacuated. As a precaution, relief supplies such as food packages, hygiene items and materials for emergency accommodation could be stored.
The situation is intensified by persistent rains in Pakistan and India as well as the continued open dams on the Indian side. Even if people are evacuated in good time, they face their livelihoods: houses, farm animals, seeds, tools and machines can often not be taken away. “I am a widow with four children. My eldest son has remained in the village to today to provide our two animals that are our only source of income. Now everything is under water and he is now fleeing us to the emergency accommodation. Here, too, there is no food for the animals and I do not know whether we can ever go back to our village,” reports Zareena Mai from Muzzargarh from the disaster area. The return to the destroyed provinces is uncertain – standing water and mud mounts considerable health risks.
Welthungerhilfe is working with local partner organizations to support the affected population as quickly as possible. 500,000 euros were made available immediately. Food rations and hygiene articles are already being distributed. In addition, seed packages are prepared for the upcoming sowing, damaged latrines and irrigation channels are repaired and the drinking water supply restored.
