The goal is deliberately ambitious, but it is clear to everyone: the development of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis into one of the most family-friendly and sustainable destinations in the Alpine region is not a sprint, but a long-term process. And it requires strategic thinking and close cooperation between all actors. Several projects have already been implemented in the region, and further concrete steps are planned by 2035. With the first comprehensive sustainability strategy, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is once again confirming its pioneering role – just as it did almost 40 years ago with the construction of the subway through Serfaus.
“For Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, sustainability means making living and recreational areas fit for the future – for locals, guests and employees. “It will only be possible if we bring ecology, economy and social responsibility into harmony.”
explained Luke Heymichchairman of the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis tourism association. “It is an ongoing process that takes time. Only if we all pull together can we take advantage of opportunities and counter risks at an early stage.”
The projects that have already been implemented include the electrification of hiking buses and the use of HVO100 fuel for additional buses, a new timetable to optimize public transport and the “S’Fest in the Village” series of events in Ladis as a certified green event. There are also employee parties and an apprenticeship offensive to strengthen the regional labor market as well as measures to promote local agriculture and regional products.
Much more is planned until 2035. Next year, the local public transport offering will be further improved and photovoltaic systems will be expanded. In the long term, up to 2035, the focus will also be on expanding the e-charging infrastructure, supporting business transfers and expanding affordable business premises for new start-ups. Also on the “to-do list”: social housing, the creation of social meeting places, leisure activities and strengthening the club system. Another important point is the modernization of spatial planning.
Success factor: togetherness
The sustainability strategy was developed jointly by representatives of the communities, the mountain railways and the tourism association. Stakeholders and companies in the region were also involved in the process. In terms of content, the focus was not on the development of a pure tourism strategy, but rather on a comprehensive regional sustainability strategy that includes all sectors. It is clear to those responsible for the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis region that future viability can only be achieved together with the population and other stakeholders. Locals, employees and holiday guests are invited to contribute their ideas and suggestions to make the region fit for the future.“I was able to start working as a sustainability coordinator in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis even before the legal obligation. On their own initiative, the actors in the region have taken the initiative to develop a sustainable strategy with a binding action plan. The respectful treatment throughout the entire development process was particularly impressive. This joint approach reinforces our commitment to driving forward sustainable and resource-saving development for all sectors and the population.”
says Katharina Lentschsustainability coordinator for the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis region.
Clear core message for a region worth living in
The strategy’s core message underlines the region’s core values and goals. The emphasis is on the fact that significant, sustainable successes can only be achieved “Together” through the commitment of residents, companies and guests. “Conscious” stands for responsible action in all areas – ecological, social and economic – and emphasizes reflected decisions with regard to their long-term effects. “For Generations” focuses on the future and on creating a stable, livable region not only for the present, but above all for future generations.
