SDAIA and OECD sign memorandum of understanding to improve monitoring of AI incidents in the Middle East
Riyadh, Saudi-Arabien (OTS) –

The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The aim of this strategic partnership is to strengthen the monitoring of AI incidents in Middle Eastern countries and improve the tracking of AI developments by implementing the OECD AI Incidents Monitor (AIM) to track data in Arabic .

The MoU was signed during the third edition of the Global AI Summit (GAIN), currently taking place in Riyadh and attended by leading figures, experts and AI specialists from around the world.

The MoU aims to improve AI monitoring capabilities across the region by working with local bodies to ensure more comprehensive reporting of AI-related incidents. This collaboration will enrich the OECD’s extensive resources, including its database of over 1000 AI measures from 70 countries, with valuable insights from the Middle East. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to support the collection and sharing of AI metrics at a global level, designed to help countries collectively address the opportunities and challenges of AI.

The OECD AI Incidents Monitor (AIM) is designed to document AI incidents and threats, providing policymakers, AI practitioners and global stakeholders with important insights into the risks and harms posed by AI systems. It plays an essential role in identifying risk patterns and promoting a collective understanding of the complex nature of AI-related incidents. This collaboration between the SDAIA and the OECD is an important step towards ensuring trustworthy AI systems that meet international standards.

The Middle East, a region increasingly concerned with AI development and regulation, has limited data on AI incidents and policies. With this MoU, Saudi Arabia, represented by SDAIA, is taking a proactive approach to closing this gap. By working closely with the OECD, the Kingdom aims to improve AI policy monitoring and incident reporting, as well as ensuring that Arabic-speaking countries can actively contribute to and benefit from the global AI landscape.
