As is well known, pets reveal a lot about their owners. In the case of Summer McINTOSH, family hangover Mickey is the four-grade proof of how high the ambitions of the 18-year-old Canadian are. The carpenter is named after a certain Michael Phelps, the most successful Olympian of all time with 28 medals.
In fact, Mickey’s owner has so far been on a similarly successful career path as the US swimmer. In 2021 at the age of 14, she was at the Olympics in Tokyo for the first time, and just missed her first medal as a fourth over the 400 meter freestyle. Last summer in Paris there was three gold for the then 17-year-old.
Nevertheless, the daughter of the swimmer Jill Horstead, who was also out for Canada in the Olympic Basin in 1984 in Los Angeles, seems to find out what she is able to do. This week, Mcintosh set up three world records for the Canadian preliminary decision for the upcoming World Cup in Singapore within five days. Over 400 meters, she improved her own record from the previous year. Over the same distance in freestyle, she prevents the world record of Australian Ariarne Titmus by more than a second. To this end, the teenager secured the world’s best over 200 meters and only missed a fourth world record over 200 meters of butterfly by 0.25 seconds.
“World records are there to be broken,” said the athlete, born in Toronto, dry afterwards. In its parade disciplines, the watch now seems to be the last serious opponent for Mcintosh. The next big goal is the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. There she would like to win at least five gold medals. It is not yet clear whether she takes the 800 meter freestyle or the 200 meter back as new disciplines.
Maybe in the end it will be both, because up to Michael Phelps 23 gold medals it is still a long way. In the future, Mcintosh will experience first -hand how to do that. After the end of the World Cup in August, the four -time world champion leaves her training group in Florida and moves to Texas to train under Bob Bowman. The 60-year-old was Phelps’ coach for years and now also trains the four-time gold winner of Paris, Léon Marchand.
“I really have big goals and know that Bob can help me,” said the Canadian to Austin in Bowman’s training center. Before that, there should be as many medals as possible at the World Championships in Singapore. After that, hangover Mickey can also look forward to a visit to the old training pool of his famous namesake.
