Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (ots/PRNewswire) – Saudi Arabia was elected Chairman of the Executive Council of the Arab League for Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) by electing its representative and member of the Executive Council, Mr. Hani bin Moqbel Al-Moqbel, as Chairman for the term 2024-2026 . This decision came after a majority vote in which 18 countries supported Saudi Arabia, two countries voted for the Moroccan candidate and one country abstained. Saudi Arabia will lead ALECSO’s Executive Board for the third consecutive year. Qatar was elected vice president and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan as rapporteur.
The election followed the Executive Council meeting held following the 27th session of the General Conference, which concluded on Friday (May 17) in Jeddah at the invitation of the Saudi National Committee for Education, Culture and Science. Council members expressed their gratitude for the positive results and joint work achieved during Saudi Arabia’s two previous terms in office, which lasted two years and ten months.
The General Conference of ALECSO also welcomed Saudi Arabia’s initiative for the “Arab Week at UNESCO” event, commended the initiative and called on Arab countries to support and participate in the event. The conference also condemned the escalation of the Israel conflict.
The General Conference welcomed Saudi Arabia’s proposal to establish a special committee to further develop the mechanisms of the General Conference and agreed to the formation of such a committee chaired by Saudi Arabia and involving all interested Arab countries. He also agreed to the inclusion of a standing agenda item for the Executive Board and the General Conference addressing educational, cultural and scientific conditions in countries affected by conflicts, crises, disasters and emergencies.
The Conference called on ALECSO to develop a response plan for educational, cultural and scientific conditions in conflict, crisis, disaster and emergency situations, based on requests from affected Member States, in order to assess their needs and the resulting damage . In addition, he approved the creation, proposed by the Organization’s Executive Board, of a Unit for Partnerships and Self-Financing within ALECSO’s organizational structure.
