Sandoz, the global leader in generics and biosimilars, today opened a new manufacturing facility in Kundl, Austria, to provide more patients with affordable, life-saving medicines made entirely in Europe.
The new facility and automated production lines will increase production capacity by 20% compared to the current capacity of 200 million packs per year. By expanding the finished dosage forms, Kundl now has a production capacity of 240 million packs per year, which corresponds to more than doubling the production volume in 2021
For 77 years we have been doing what we do best in Kundl: penicillin, from the active ingredient to the finished packaged tablet. To ensure that it stays that way, we are investing in our efficiency and effectiveness: our 50 million euro investment in innovative technologies increases the production capacity in Kundl to around 240 million packs per year. With a pioneering spirit, we provide patients with more antibiotics in over 100 countries

On a production area of 3,000 square meters, innovative technologies enable the production of a billion additional penicillin tablets and a doubling of the amount of dry juices, which are mainly used in children’s medicines.
As the hub and center of our antibiotic production, Kundl is a true lighthouse project when it comes to security of supply with antibiotics. This investment is our contribution to combating shortages and improving access for patients. Sandoz has the only remaining large, vertically integrated penicillin production network in Europe. From active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) to finished dosage forms (FDF), Sandoz produces penicillin in Austria – the world’s leading category of antibiotics.
The opening of the new facility is part of a 200 million euro investment in the Kundl site to significantly improve the production of penicillin active ingredients and increase the production of finished products in order to better care for patients in more than 100 countries worldwide.
Tyrol has successfully positioned itself as an attractive location for life sciences for many years and is proud to be home to Europe’s only remaining penicillin production site. Sandoz is an important partner, employer and source of inspiration for us. After a year of investment in 2023, Sandoz is again focusing on increasing penicillin production capacity this year.
