The Austrian Workers’ Samaritan Association (ASBÖ) mourns the loss of its long-time president and honorary president, Dkfm. Dr. Hannes Androsch, who died at the age of 87. With his death, not only the Samaritan Association, but society as a whole loses an outstanding personality whose work left deep traces in many areas.
Hannes Androsch was a person who always looked outside the box. After his successful political career, he dedicated himself with the same passion to entrepreneurship, where he set standards and enjoyed a unique career. At the same time, he was an author, recipient of numerous awards and a voice for social justice. He never forgot his roots and always stood up for the most vulnerable in our society.
His connection to the Samaritan Association began in 1970 when he joined the ASB Floridsdorf-Donaustadt. From 1982 to 1999, he shaped the association’s fortunes as president and led it through a phase of growth and renewal. Even afterwards he remained closely connected to the Samaritan Association as honorary president to this day.
The 1980s and 1990s under his leadership were characterized by innovation and vision. The rapid social changes required a realignment of the ASBÖ: Social services were expanded, especially for seniors and people with disabilities. Medical services at major events and civil defense became new priorities. A visible sign of this development was the opening of the new federal building on Hollergasse in Vienna in 1992.
Thanks to his commitment and vision, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund is now the second largest rescue organization in Austria and a leader in many urban areas.
Hannes Androsch’s achievements have also been recognized many times within the Samaritan Association:
- 1984: Anniversary badge in bronze
- 2000: Cross of Honor on the blue ribbon
- 2004 and 2008: Ring of Honor of the Samaritan Association
But Hannes Androsch was more than just a title holder. He was a “movers” who was never satisfied with the status quo. His passion and tireless commitment made him a role model for generations. He was a bridge builder who brought different actors together to overcome major challenges together.
Franz Schnabl, President of the Austrian Workers’ Samaritan Association, praises his work: “Hannes Androsch has shaped the Samaritan Association like no other. His vision, his assertiveness and his tireless commitment have made the ASBÖ what it is today. His commitment to social justice and the most vulnerable in our society was exemplary. We are not only losing an extraordinary honorary president, but also a good friend.”
Reinhard Hundsmüller, Federal Managing Director of the Austrian Workers’ Samaritan Association, adds: “Hannes Androsch was a person who not only talked, but always acted. His vision and tireless commitment were an inspiration to us all. He not only led the Samaritan Association in difficult times, but also opened up new paths. We will miss him dearly, but his legacy will continue to guide us.”
It is with deep respect and great gratitude that we say goodbye to an extraordinary person whose legacy will continue to accompany us. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones in these difficult times.
The Austrian Workers’ Samaritan Association will always honor Hannes Androsch’s memory.
