Salomon-Sulzer-Platz in the first district of Vienna ceremoniously opened

Vienna (OTS) –

On March 18, district leader Markus Figl, Sulzer’s primeval-UR-Kelin Julie Reisler and the President of the Israelite cultural community (IKG) Vienna Oskar Deutsch revealed the table for the opening of the Salomon-Sulzer-Platz in the inner city. Salomon Sulzer was the first senior cantor of the Vienna city temple opened 199 years ago and is considered the founder of modern synagogue singing. His compositional style was based on the Viennese classic, among other things, and gave him the admiration of contemporaries such as Franz Schubert or Friedrich Liszt, who visited the Vienna city temple to hear Sulzer. To date, his compositions in synagogues worldwide, including the large synagogue of Jerusalem, are sung and form a unique cultural heritage that originated in the heart of Vienna.

Oskar German: “We are pleased that the Jewish heritage of our city experiences new visibility with the inauguration of the Salomon-Sulzer-Platz and this great personality is also recognized in public space. For the present, this place of space is a commitment to the Jewish life and underlines our unbreakable belonging to our Vienna. I also thank the district leadership and the city of Vienna for the implementation of this project.”

The project to name a place after Salomon Sulzer in the first district has existed since 2007. With a unanimous decision in the December district council meeting of the inner city in 2023, the square around the roundabout between Marc-Aurel-Straße, Vorlaufstraße and Sterngasse was planned. This is the place in the immediate vicinity of the Salomon Sulzer place of work in the Vienna City Temple, which will be restored and renovated on the occasion of its 200th anniversary from autumn 2025.

District head Markus Figl: “Salomon Sulzer was not only a long -time upper cantor, but also gained international importance as the founder of modern synagogue singing. His work is a contribution to the world -famous music city of Vienna, since it is considered one of the most formative shapes of Vienna’s musical life in the 19th century. It speaks for the political climate in the inner city that this application has not only been adopted with unanimity, but also all of the parties represented in the district parliament ÖVP, SPÖ, Greens, Neos and FPÖ act as a common applicant.

Julie Reisler came to Vienna on the occasion of the name of her famous ancestor from the United States: “The naming of the Salomon-Sulzer-Platz is a profound homage to a visionary composer, conductor and mediator, whose music has passed the test of the time and continues to sound in Jewish congregations. His melodies became the basis of modern Jewish liturgy music by unite and generating them. Legacy in Vienna, but also recognizes the permanent power of music to raise, inspire and bring people together. ”

The inauguration of the square was accompanied musically by Salomon Sulzer’s successor, Oberkantor Shmuel Barzilai.
