The new Robert Hochner Young Talent Award was presented as part of the award ceremony

On Thursday, June 13, 2024, ORF journalists Yilmaz Gülüm and Faris Rahoma were awarded the Robert Hochner Prize 2024. Gülüm and Rahoma received this year’s award for their work for the ORF “Report”, in which they reported on the profiteering in slums for refugees. According to the jury, the award winners would fulfill an essential task of quality journalism and thus expand the spectrum of common reporting by speaking not about but with those affected in their articles, according to the jury. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen presented the award given by the journalists’ union to the two winners.
ORF General Director Roland Weißmann: “I warmly congratulate Yilmaz Gülüm and Faris Rahoma on being awarded the Robert Hochner Prize. With their contribution, they have drawn attention to an important issue, taken on social responsibility and set an example for independent, quality journalism that the ORF offers every day to serve the people living in Austria.”
ORF radio director Ingrid Thurnher: “Faris Rahoma and Yilmaz Gülüm have made a special contribution to quality journalism with their high level of commitment, their language skills and their trustworthy dealings with those affected. I would like to congratulate them on their well-deserved award with this year’s Robert Hochner Prize.”
New Robert Hochner Young Talent Prize for critical journalism on social media and online platforms
As part of the award ceremony in the Vienna Hofburg, in addition to the award for Yilmaz Gülüm and Faris Rahoma, the new Robert Hochner Young Talent Prize for outstanding work by young journalists on social media platforms and online media was also presented. The prize, worth 5,000 euros, will be awarded from 2024 to young journalists whose work is characterized by critical thinking, courage, high professional competence and social responsibility. The call for applications is aimed at all journalists up to the age of 27. Your work can be submitted in all common online formats.
