Revitalized fossil world of Weinviertel in Stetten reopened

The fossil world of Weinviertel in Stetten (Korneuburg district) has been fundamentally modernized by around two million euros in the past few months and is now presenting itself even more attractive. The official reopening took place on Friday by Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner. Special highlights of the redesigned complex are the world’s largest fossil oyster with a new show, a spectacular giant shark for climbing, the walk -in tower snail with a giant slide and the new adventure playground with a spacious water play area and mangrove forest.

“Today the official reopening of an excursion destination takes place, which is now even more modern, inviting and, above all, more future-oriented. One of the most impressive nature adventure museums in our country shines in new splendor and was ‘brought up to date’,” said Mikl-Leitner, who also emphasized: “A place has arisen here, which makes knowledge exciting for young and old. This area was a tropical sea millions of years ago and today this place awakens the spirit of research and imagination. ”

“Even in the past, the fossil world was a top excursion destination in the Weinviertel and now this attraction has become a real world of experience,” said the governor another aspect. It is a nice goal to bring many families here. The Lower Austria Card also plays a central role in this context and is a strong impulse provider-also for the fossil world of Weinviertel, according to the governor. “This project was created in a common cooperation and the money invested here is a good investment in the future of our children because they can also experience natural history and discover their research spirit,” she said.

After the official ceremony, the guests were able to discover the new world of experience on a tour of university professor Mathias Harzhauser from the Natural History Museum Vienna and the Fossil World Team. The petrified oyster riff is the world’s largest of its kind and prepares the maritime past of the southern Weinviertel in an entertaining and informative way. In the museum area, various fossil species testify to the tropical world, which prevailed in this area 17 million years ago. The fossil world of Weinviertel in Stetten was opened in 2009. The Fossil World Weinviertel is open to visitors to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and invites everyone interested to dive into the fascinating world of prehistoric times.
