Spy suspect
The accusation is serious: According to the arrest warrant, Egisto Ott worked for the Russian secret service FSB for years. Ott therefore passed on cell phones and laptops specially equipped for government service to the Russians. He also actively and illegally obtained information about Russian opponents of the regime. Ott had been in the sights of Austrian investigators for a long time, but the current arrest required a tip from the British secret service MI5. Alexander Sattmann, Martin Pusch and Stefan Daubrawa on the many open questions in the Austrian espionage case.

Fake-News-Flut
In 2024 there will be more elections worldwide than ever before – there will be more than 80 rounds, including those in the USA with the expected fight between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. According to the World Economic Forum’s current global risk report, disinformation campaigns and fake news based on artificially generated images and videos are the biggest risk this year: a flood of fake news and AI images on the Internet is to be expected. How can our societies arm themselves against the effects of disinformation? How can political parties deal with these dangers? And what can individuals do to better recognize fake news on social media platforms? Laura Franz and Julia Ortner report.
Party proliferation
Innsbruck is different: 13 lists are fighting for entry into the local council – and 13 people are fighting for the mayor’s chair. In the last election six years ago, the Greens emerged as the resounding winners, with Georg Willi becoming the first Green politician to become mayor of a state capital. But after less than three years, the city coalition made up of the Greens, ÖVP, For Innsbruck and SPÖ collapsed. There was also a lot of rumblings in the clubs. Party departures and splits led to a proliferation of new lists and alliances. In Innsbruck people hope that calm will return after the election, but the divisions remain deep.
