Final spurt in the EU election campaign
How do the top candidates try to mobilize the electorate in the final phase, what are the main focuses of their election events? On Sunday, almost 6.4 million Austrians will be called upon to vote on their representation in the EU Parliament. Austria will be represented by 20 parliamentarians in the coming legislative period. Disappointed expectations
30 years after the yes vote in the referendum to join the EU, satisfaction with membership has fallen sharply. Were the expectations set too high – even in Burgenland, which benefited most from EU accession through Objective 1 funding? Matthias Linke visited two communities in Burgenland: in northern Draßburg, where almost 90 percent of yes votes were the highest in Austria 30 years ago and now many are disappointed, and in southern Gaas, where winegrowers were afraid of cheap competition. but are now among those who benefited from joining the EU.
