Verbal derailments, insults, hate messages: there is often talk of a brutalization of language. Especially in social networks, those who sharply point out things are rewarded. But things are also getting heated in National Council debates. Has the conversation become harsher? How is coexistence possible today? The “Report” visits the community of Deutsch-Wagram, where there were discords during the 2016 presidential election campaign. How do two representatives of the conflicting parties look back on the dispute today and what lessons did they learn from it? Jürgen Klatzer and Miriam Ressi search for answers.

Sobotka’s last serenade
Who will win the National Council election in the fall? Who will form a coalition and who will go into opposition? Many questions await an answer. Only one thing is certain: the future President of Parliament will not be called Wolfgang Sobotka. The Lower Austrian sat at the head of the National Council for seven years and was often at the center of various debates. With some decisions, Sobotka not only caused heated feelings among the opposition. The book “Can South Tyrol be a state?” is making waves. The demand for South Tyrol’s statehood has so far come from the right-wing populists; this time it is business people and the peasantry who want to govern themselves based on the Scottish model.
