Datum: Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m

Ort: Food distribution point “Waldkloster”, Gellertplatz 7, 1100 Vienna

Press conference with Caritas President Nora Tödtling-Musenbichler, Klaus Schwertner, Director of Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna, Doris Anzengruber, Head of Social Advice at Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna, and Dr. Janina Enachescu, Federal Statistical Office Austria, Directorate of Population, Social Affairs and Living Conditions

Gender not necessary? While the situation has returned to normal for many people after the past years of crisis, it remains critical, especially for women and children. Caritas social advice centers confirm worrying figures: two thirds of the people who seek help there are women, and almost 20 percent are single parents.

There are many reasons for this: women are still responsible for the majority of care work, both in their own families and in society. They do almost two hours more unpaid work every day than men.

Poverty is not fate, poverty is the result of unjust structures. We as Caritas do not want to accept this injustice. Because women and children deserve a good future and because gender should not determine the risk of poverty.

The special evaluation “Consequences of the crisis and the social situation of women” by Statistics Austria on behalf of Caritas Austria will be presented for the first time as part of the press conference.
